Playing hookie

I don't know who's going to be more upset when Stephanie's maternity leave ends next week - me or Drew. It just might be me.

Before we left for the beach, Lane and I convinced Stephanie to let Drew play hookie from Pre-K so we could all go to the zoo one morning.

OK, I admit, we didn't have to do much convincing.

The weather was awesome that day. Lane and Drew love hanging together. And Stephanie is getting stir crazy staying at home.

It's only Pre-K, right?

The boys had a blast that morning. Including Preston, who's waking up and showing us his smile - seeing that babe smile is even better than seeing exotic animals at the zoo.

We saw lions, which Lane loved.

Can you tell us what a lion says, Lane.

Roar, he would yell back.

We saw birds. Check out these cuckoos.

This little one looks just like his daddy.

He liked the zoo so much he decided to stay awake for a few hours to enjoy the fun with us.

Oh, and then there's this monkey, who fell and bumped his knee. Stephanie gave him a band-aid for it but instead of putting it on his knee, he put it on his nose. Like Drew, he said.

(Drew had a previous injury from the night before that required a bandage to the nose. And no, Lane did not leave it on there long. Just long enough for a photo and a good laugh from me and Stef.)

We also saw bears - very sleepy bears. Who also happened to be what we stumbled upon just as our little bears were getting very sleepy.

So then we saw some wild copycats. It is not often you get to see copycats in their natural environment.

We also enjoyed hanging out with this little monkey.

Who was a big fan of the flamingos.

On the car ride home, I asked Drew what he liked more - going to school or playing hookie and hanging out with Lane.

"I think I like both," he said. "Going to school and playing hookie."
