We disappeared for a few days. Headed down to Tybee Island so Papa could do a little work and the three of us could enjoy a few days in the sun and sand.
And, it is official. We've decided October Beach is the best way to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. The perfect ending. The perfect beginning.
Although we didn't dare go in the water, we enjoyed hanging in the sand and feeling the sun soak into our skin. We took advantage of every moment - napping, watching football, cheering on The Braves for my boys. Bathing in the sun, chatting with an old friend and reading a book for mama.
I wondered what it would be like - to be here on this island with my two loves. The last time I was on Tybee, Lane was just a wee bump on my belly.
I chose college based on its proximity to the beach. I spent hours in its sand during my college years. I drank up all it offered - the sights, the sun, the drinks. I've kissed boys on its shores and listened to music all day long with friends.
After college, I returned often - feeling a need every year to reconnect with this beach.
Turns out, being here with my boys was better than any trip - long or short - I've ever made to Tybee.
I watched my babe play in the sand. He hadn't forgotten how much he loves his beach. It's one of the few things he gets from his mama. He called out, " BEACH. BIG WAVES."
He marveled at the idea that we were just a few feet from the beach. He couldn't get over the fact that from he stands outside our little beach cottage door, he could see it, smell it, walk to it.
He'd go to the door, wiggle the knob and tell us, "Beach, beach, please."
And we couldn't resist taking him there.
I love these two so much. Not just because they are mine. Not just because the little one loves the beach so much. Not just because the big one loves me so much he gave me an early afternoon to hang on the beach with an old college friend or an entire late afternoon on the beach to sleep.
I love them for who they are.
In my eyes, they are perfect.
The fact that Lane loves the beach as much as I do is just one little sprinkle on my great big cupcake of a life.
Because Lane and I don't care if we have to wear our t-shirts and our hooded sweatshirts to the beach. If the beach is close by - we are rocking our shades and heading to the beach, bitch!
And we might just rock The Pirate too.
If we can't jump the waves, we'll hunt for seashells, throw a ball, search the rocks for sea creatures and dig in the sand.
And when we aren't at the beach, we're thinking about when we can grab our beach bag and head back that way.
All in all, we spent a perfect three days together. The three of us - with just three more months until we are four.
Because we didn't forget about the babe growing inside of me. We loved on him too. Sure, we loved on our Lane just a little bit more. But, before we left, we asked him if Bro Bro will love the beach too. We asked if we could return next year with his brother.
We pretty much decided it is something this family must do every year - October Beach.
Saying farewell to all we've had and hello to everything we have to look forward to.......
